About Local Missions

The Local Missions Committee enables and encourages the members of First (Scots) to present the gospel of Christ in the community by the example set by Our Lord, Jesus Christ to love one another.

The First (Scots) Local Missions Committee works with partner organizations throughout the Lowcountry to help serve local needs and to share the love of Christ through service to our neighbors.  There are many ways to be involved in local mission projects and there is truly something for every interest and ability.  From campus ministries at the Citadel and College of Charleston, to supporting Thornwell Home, to providing shelter for neighbors in need, Local Missions has volunteer and donation opportunities on going all year long.  Some of our current partner organizations with urgent needs include:

Volunteer Opportunities

This year, S.C.O.T.S. Day (Serving Community Organizations Together on Saturday) will be held on April 22nd! This is a wonderful opportunity for church members to engage in local missions through volunteering and participating in mission driven events.
Below are this year’s volunteer opportunities. Please use the provided links for sign-up:

Family Opportunity in Molly Wier Hall – This will be an opportunity for service and fellowship. Stations will be set-up throughout Molly Wier Hall for projects such as making card for homebound church members and making toiletry bags for the homeless.
This activity will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Molly Wier Hall.

Carolina Youth Development Center – Founded in 1790, Carolina Youth Development Center is an important part of Charleston’s historic and cultural heritage, a direct descendant of the Charleston Orphan House, America’s first publicly-funded orphanage.
Today, CYDC provides programs reaching over 900 children, youth and their families locally each year. We care for young people who are victims of physical and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment, as well as providing resources and support to area families at risk of having their children removed from their home.
There will be two volunteer opportunities at CYDC:
Indoor CYDC Volunteer Opportunity – This opportunity will involve organizing donations for the CYDC’s storehouse.
Outdoor CYDC Volunteer Opportunity – This opportunity will be a landscaping project for the center.
Volunteers for these two projects (open to all ages!) will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Carolina Youth Development Center (5055 Lackawanna Blvd. N. Charleston, 29405).

Habitat for Humanity – There are two volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity. The first is one a construction site and the second is volunteering for ReStore, a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price and with no sales tax.
